The Wizard and the Warlord The Wardstone Trilogy Book Three M R Mathias 9781478174639 Books
When the Royal Wizard of Westland poisons the king so that his puppet prince can take the throne and start a continental war, a young squire is forced to run for his life carrying the powerful sword that his dying monarch burdened him with from the death bed.Two brothers find a magic ring and start on paths to becoming the most powerful sort of enemies, while an evil young sorceress unwillingly falls in love with one of them when he agrees to help her steal a dragon's egg for her father. Her father just happens to be the Royal Wizard, and despite his daughter's feelings, he would love nothing more than to sacrifice the boy!
All of these characters, along with the Wolf King of Wildermont, the Lion Lord of Westland, and a magical hawk named Talon, are on a collision course toward Willa the Witch Queen's palace in the distant kingdom of Highwander. There the very bedrock is formed of the powerful magical substance called Wardstone.
Who are the heroes? And will they get there before the Royal Wizard and his evil hordes do?
Whatever happens, the journey will be spectacular, and the confrontation will be cataclysmic.
If you took every major epic fantasy that has ever been written and twisted them all into one fantastic tale of magic, sword play and just plain old fantasy fun, you might get the first half of this monster of a read. The last half is a climax so thrilling that words can't even describe it. This is what fantasy fans have been waiting for...

The Wizard and the Warlord The Wardstone Trilogy Book Three M R Mathias 9781478174639 Books Reviews
This expansive, ever-widening trilogy ended as wonderfully as it began. The depth of the characters and the sinister darkness of Gerard were intense and fascinating. It was hard to tear myself away for even a minute, especially since I have invested almost 1,000 pages into this series already, and I was eager to see how this would all play out. This epic ending of the trilogy had a similar feel to Tolkien's Lord of the Rings, as the forces of good and evil converge in a final confrontation to decide the fate of the world.
This may sound overly dramatic, but this is the sort of series that can change someone's outlook on literature entirely. I remember how fantasy novels had once inspired me to become a writer, and although this series was intended for young adults and serious fantasy readers, I can see how Mathias' series could definitely be a watershed moment for a young person. I would recommend this entire series for anyone interested in an amazing escape for a few weeks or even a few months if you can resist the temptation to teat through the series as fast as possible. It's a wonderful blend of fantasy, fun, suspense, and action. I wish I could start all over at the beginning again!
This is the final story of an exciting trilogy. As usual, Mathias does a great job with his descriptions of this amazing fantasy world full of magical creatures. There are some new characters introduced, like Lady Telgra the beautiful elf who plays a major part in helping the humans fight evil. Though she is much older than Phen, or Marble Boy as he's now called, is it possible she's in love with him?
The city of Xwarda is the scene of the final battle. Abbadon, the Master Warlord vs Sir Hyden Hawk Skyler is an epic battle to end all battles. It's fast paced and gory, just what I've come to expect from Mathias. He does an amazing job of tying the three stories together, reminiscing the words of the cackling fortune teller in book one to Hyden as his little brother Gerard sits beside him. "Some day, you will watch helplessly as one you love dearly attempts to destroy what the one that sits beside you is to become."
First off, the Wardstone Trilogy, in my opinion, should be marketed or sold as a single trilogy--one discounted price for all three, instead of separate prices for the individual books. You know, like almost ever other trilogy books at bookstores today.
Having said that, I just like to say I have spent countless hours reading about the adventures of Hyden and his allies. If just like me you began your acquaintance with them in the first book, you've probably met a lot of characters that are now "dead" by the second and third books that reading this last installment in the Wardstone series can feel sentimental at times. And yes, again this is epic--at more than 400 pages, this is not exactly something you read on a Friday night and finish off by the morning. But then again, the story telling in this and in the other two previous books is quite fast-paced that you don't even notice you're flipping through hundreds of pages.
But like any other tale, the Wardstone has to end--although if I were the author, the Wardstone does not have to end in a third book--consider George RR Martin of the `A Song of Ice and Fire' fame, for example--the guy's currently writing the sixth installment in the grand series, and he's not even finished, yet. And I don't see any reason why it could not be done with the Wardstone series, with all its majestic potential. I say let's have some more!
M. R. Mathias's heightened literary power is most evident in `The Wizard and the Warlord'--he has further sharpened his writing skills, and is using it now in laser-like precision in playing around the narrative of this last book in the grand Wardstone series. If these books can be compared to images, I'd say this last book has the "highest definition" of all three--every moment is richly described, painted, conjured in the reader's imagination so much that you're left gasping for breath at times--and I'm not even talking about the battle scenes, yet!
Overall, `The Wizard and the Warlord' is a majestic, amazing, awe-inspiring, and ultimately emotionally satisfying finish to an epic saga. This book deserves nothing less than five stars.
